Rome, Italy, may 2013.An abandoned factory of sausages has been occupied for nearly 50 families of Italians, Arabs and RomaniansWorld capital of fashion and elegance , Rome is also de spot of a perfect storm. The financial crisis sweeping the peninsula destroys jobs everyday. The new unemployed , without any hope of getting a new job in the midst of the worst crisis in decades, cannot afford the rent for the dwelling they occupy or the mortgage of the house they believe their own . Within a few months , the judicial system evict them, with politeness or by force.
At the same time , in several areas of the city there are large buildings finished up some years ago , but unoccupied . It is unclear why, maybe their owners cannot sell the apartments now or maybe is simple real state speculation.
But need and glitz coexisted for too long , too close one to another . What is obvius happened : entire families groups fought to seize the empty houses .
At first they were isolated events , basically an immigrant issue. But squatters spread like a stain across Rome. It is nor just an immigrant matter anymore, now more and more Italians are port of the lot.
Meanwhile Italian government has shown a surprising lack of ideas or proposals. The most common response by State is police repression. But squatters have organized better and far from intimidated they are clashing police and, more and more often, winning the battle.
Immersed in its own eternal crisis, Italian political class finds no way out. During decades they took a huge international debt to soften the growing problems. Now , under pressure from the European Union , they propose austerity plans that only offer more poverty and more unemployment who the ones that had lost everything, including a roof to shelter themselves.
